Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee
- Xbox Video Game
-
Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee is primarily a puzzle game, with some action and adventure thrown in. The puzzles are great brainteasers that require players to use the special abilities of the two characters, know when to switch between them, and know when to guzzle performance-enhancing SoBe beverages. Several of the game's best puzzles get the player so caught up in their conventions that they overlook much simpler solutions.

Project Gotham Racing - Xbox Video Game
-
Bizarre Creations, the developer of Metropolis Street Racer for Dreamcast, makes its Xbox debut with a sequel of sorts. Project Gotham Racing is very similar to its predecessor, except with refined gameplay mechanics and vastly improved graphics. The focus of this racer is unique, as it's centered on the "kudos" system. Players are rewarded bonus points for sustaining slides, riding on two wheels, catching air, clean driving, and passing other drivers. Chaining any of these actions together results in high-scoring combinations. So in addition to trying to finish the race first, the player must worry about style and technique to succeed in this game. The kudos system is fun and definitely makes this game stand out from the competition.

Transworld Surf - Xbox Video Game
-
Transworld Surf was developed by Angel Studios, a game shop known for creating visually stunning outdoor environments. Thus, it's no surprise that this extreme surfing game excels graphically. The waves are realistic and detailed, and make extensive use of the Xbox's lighting and bump-mapping capabilities. All 10 of the game's locations have a distinct look that properly reflects the conditions in each area. Also lifelike are the player models and animations. The sound effects aren't nearly as remarkable as the graphics, but the music is great. The diverse soundtrack features tracks from Nebula, Dr. Onionskin, Cali Agents, Anti-Flag, and Sum 41. Best of all, players can program their own soundtrack from the Xbox hard drive.

HALO- Xbox Video Game
-
More often than not, when a game is in development for more than three years, it does not live up to the hype. Bungie's Halo is the exception. Not only does it meet expectations, it greatly exceeds them. This sci-fi first-person shooter is a nearly perfect blend of gameplay, graphics, and sound.

Dark Summit - Xbox Video Game
-
Extreme sports just got a little more bizarre with this game that mixes snowboarding with espionage. And somehow, it works. The plot involves the efforts of boarder Naya as she investigates the wacky activities at the decidedly snowboarder-unfriendly Mt. Garrick. Naya must complete a long series of stunt-based missions in order to gain enough lift points to get to the top of Mt. Garrick. In general, the pacing isn't nearly as fast as snowboarding king SSX, yet Dark Summit's weird cast of characters and emphasis on combos and timing makes for a deeper game.
